Frequently Asked Questions: Grantmaking
How much does the Field Foundation award in grants?
Along with its strategic funding partners, distributes more than $6.5 million annually to organizations and leaders working to address systemic issues in Chicago’s most divested communities.
What is the average size grant awarded?
Grant requests have typically in the range of $15,000 to $50,000.
Can a for-profit organization apply for a grant?
Generally, no. Qualified 501(c)(3) organizations are preferred.
Is a 501(c)(3) designation required when applying for a grant?
Although a 501(c)(3) designation is preferred, an organization within our Justice and Journalism & Storytelling program areas may on occasion partner with a 501(c)(3) as its fiscal agent or fiscal sponsor. Please contact a Field Foundation program officer to clarify and confirm eligibility.
What is the difference between a fiscal agent and sponsor?
Although the term “fiscal sponsor” is often used loosely and interchangeably with the term “fiscal agent”, the terms do not mean the same thing.
“Fiscal sponsorship” typically involves a 501(c)(3) organization (the “fiscal sponsor”) providing financial or other support to a project that does not have its 501(c)(3) status (the “sponsored project” or “project”).
“Fiscal Agency” typically involves one entity (the “fiscal agent”) acting as the legal agent of another entity (the “principal”).
Within our Justice and Journalism & Storytelling portfolios, we accept grant requests from both fiscal agents and fiscal sponsors—please contact a Field Foundation program officer to discuss.
Does the Field Foundation accept paper copies of grant applications?
Yes. If you are unable to submit your application through our online platform, we will work with you to submit hard copies of your forms. Please contact a Field Foundation program officer to discuss. Note: We expect to have a new application process in place in early October 2023 for our Justice and Journalism & Storytelling program areas.
